Fire Safety: Principle Briefing Note

On 27th June 2022, Michael Gove, former Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities published an open letter to freeholders and managing agents advising that leaseholder protections that are part of the Building Safety Act would be made law on 28th June 2022.

He advised that qualifying leaseholders may no longer be liable for financial costs associated with building safety defects, such as cladding remediation works. A full copy of the letter can be viewed here and guidance for leaseholders issued by the government can be viewed here.

We fully appreciate that the issue of fire safety has been of great concern to many leaseholders and we are pleased to see the government taking positive action. There are still many unanswered questions and we are awaiting further clarification on many areas, including advice on how new legislation should be applied.

We hope that this will be provided by the government at the earliest opportunity and, as soon as we have further updates, we will contact affected leaseholders directly.
